Casey Kasem
Many of us grew up listening to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem on Sundays. I loved that show, and spent many a Sunday building elaborate LEGO creations while eagerly waiting to find out which song had claimed the #1 spot that week. It was theoretically three hours long, but with commercials it ended up being longer.

To me, it captured the essence of American pop music before it devolved into the confused mess it became in the 90’s. There were still terrible songs on the radio in the 80’s, but the overall musical quality of popular music was significantly higher in those days.

Plus, with the supremely skilled Casey Kasem behind the mic, you knew you were always in for an entertaining show. His vocal delivery was always perfect, and he always had cool bits of random trivia that occasionally blew your mind. For example: did you know that Rick Springfield is Australian? Or that the guy from the Thompson Twins sang backup on Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is“?

Some stations replay old AT40 shows, but I recently set out to see if any MP3’s of them exist. Thankfully, it turns out that there are lots of them available via various torrent sites. I downloaded a bunch, and they’ve made my daily commute much more entertaining. I get on the road, put one on, and suddenly it’s 1986. Then, when I get out of the car, I zoom back to the futuristic utopia of 2013.

Anyway, I highly recommend downloading a few of these if you liked that show as much as I did.
